In 2018, the government released the final rule for non-road Bharat Stage IV and V emission standards, which makes it the first region outside of the Europe to adopt these standards to control of emissions from new diesel powered non-road equipment.

Bharat stage emission standards (BSES) are emission standards instituted by the Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engines and Spark-ignition engines equipment, including motor vehicles. BS VI can bring PM in diesel cars down by 80% . The new norms will bring down nitrogen oxides from diesel cars by 70% and in petrol cars by 25%. This is the first time India has adopted one set of consistent standards regulating both agricultural and construction equipment.
