Election symbols are reserved only for registered parties that become eligible as a national or state party.

Election Commission of India

Election Commission adopted the symbol system since the first General Election Lok Sabha in 1951, when literacy rate was only 16%. Election symbols are commonly known objects, animate or inanimate, so that they are easily identifiable by the electors and are readily distinguishable from each other.
